A Brief History of Swimsuitology

A Brief History of Swimsuitology

Swimsuits – today a tiny piece of fabric with a huge dose of confidence.

But a few decades ago? They were more like a textile suit of armor against sinful gazes.
Let’s take a quick (and fun) dive into the history of swimsuitology.

👵 19th Century: Water is great, but shame is greater

It’s the year 1850. Want to go for a swim? Sure, but first, put on:

  • a long wool dress,

  • ankle-length pants,

  • a lace-up corset (because... why not?),

  • shoes (!),

  • and a head covering – heaven forbid the sun lightens your rebellious hair.

To avoid scandalizing society with your... calves (!), inventors created bathing machines – little changing huts on wheels that rolled you straight into the water. True story.

💃 The Roaring 20s: Show those shoulders, shock the world!

After World War I, women decided they’d had enough – the war was over, and so were the fifteen layers of swimwear.
One-piece swimsuits began to appear, revealing:

  • shoulders,

  • knees,

  • and even a bit of back!

At the time, it was pure scandal. In some countries, officials even measured women’s swimsuits with rulers. Too much skin? Fine!

💣 1946: Bikini Boom

French designer Louis Réard came up with something so tiny it couldn’t be called anything but… the bikini.
He named it after the Bikini Atoll, where atomic bombs were tested. Because the public outrage? Equally explosive.

The first bikinis were so daring, no model wanted to wear them. So Réard ended up hiring a “layer-shedding specialist” (a.k.a. a strip— err, cabaret performer).

📺 Baywatch Era: Less fabric, more slow motion

Remember Pamela Anderson’s iconic red one-piece?
The '90s taught us that:

  • the higher the leg cut, the better,

  • swimsuits didn’t need to cover much – just stay on,

  • and everything looks better in slow motion.

Men? They just threw on a pair of baggy shorts.
Fairness level: zero.

🌈 The 2020s: Swimsuits for every body, every mood, and every selfie

Today’s swimsuits are:

  • neon, sparkly, asymmetrical, recycled,

  • ready for the beach, festivals, paddleboarding, or your Instagram grid,

  • and most importantly – for everyone.

Whether you’re a pear, apple, pineapple, gooseberry, or not even a fruit – swimsuits love you just the way you are.
